  1. I've been in and out of the wine and liquor business for 20 some years and I've faced this question with customers time after time because it's a birth date an anniversary or some such thing. Wine is a very delicate substance requiring very special care and handling. To find a bottle that has been properly cared for for 70 or 80 years is d**n near impossible. The fancy high end wine shops might say they can deliver old vintages but will not guarantee their drinkability. My suggestion has always been to look for a single vintage Armagnac or Cognac because distilled spirits are much more stable and require far less care than wine. There are several makers and some prized vintages out there waiting to be realized. This is the best way to get a vintage product that is still consumable. Once the owner of the shop I was working at decided he was going to be a big shot and get a bottle from 1895 of French Bordeaux for a famous customer it was $2500. A day later the customer was back saying the wine was bad, no kidding! all of us turned and laughed cause we all knew this was going to happen this wine was spoiled and was never meant to be opened but the boss thought he knew what he was doing and that ended up costing him $2500 I even tried to tell him this was risky business but he knew better or so he thought.
