We got a virus on our computer that disabled avg from doing updates and after we did a scan and restarted it, a new windows user account called "family" had been created and we were shut out of our own. My fiance says that according to our IT expert, it would have come from a web page but is this really possible?

  1. You can get a virus if a web site has malicious script present but you most of time get viruses from downloading and opening things up like E-mail attachments.

  2. Yes it is very possible it came from a harmless web page

Download and run firefox to protect your computer from future spyware attacks and pop ups which are coming in through internet explorer (Trojan downloaders, win32 ).Browser attacks aren't easy to spot because they piggyback on legitimate traffic that doesn't exhibit many obvious warning signs

  3. if you still can, then get into the safe mode and install a antivirus software, i personally use Nod32.

like other people said, yes, you can get virus from the web page.  and, STOP USING IE !!!  try Opera or Firefox, a lot more safer than IE.

you need have these on your computer:

    - a good antivirus (Nod32)

    - a good firewall (comodo, zonealarm, etc)

    - a good spyware dector (zonealarm, Malwarebyte's anti-malware, etc)

    - a good backup software (or simply copy your files to a usb disk on a regular basis)

  4. You might have an open RPC port in your firewall or router that a portscanner found and then jacked its way in.  You should disconnect from the network immediately, and then install Trend Micro AntiVirus. It's the best!

  5. No. For the virus to have created another account and disabled your previous one, it would have to be located on your local harddisk. (E.g. you downloaded something). Webpages do leave potentially harmful 'cookies' and 'temp' files, but nothing that could be responsible for your situation.

    Hope this helped.

  6. yes it is possible, if some one say's no there wrong, you can have all the protection and still get something like a trojan or a virus, spyware, malware, these so called hackers that infect these sites are 1 step ahead of the game, download the yahoo anti spy program, it really works too, also have you heard of McAfee? that is also a good one to have too to have, you just have to scan your computer 2 times a week, and make sure you flush your cache and all that good stuff too

  7. Yes, you can get it from a web page, especially gambling, free music and p**n pages.  You also get it from Peer to Peer music downloads.  Finally, it can be embedded in videos or special video viewers.
