  1. I think you would need to consider that travel was very difficult at the turn of the century for the 1904 Olympic games that were hosted by the United States - so there wasn't a very large turnout at all.

If you don't count 1904 (difficult travel, smaller turnout of only 12 nations), 1980 (61 nation boycott) or 1984 (16 nation boycott), the most gold medals won is 55 by the Soviet Union at the 1988 Games in Seoul.

  2. It the Soviet Union (Russia) in the 1980 Olympics in Moscow with 195 medals.

  3. Only Gold medals count. In 1984 in Los Angeles, without the Russians, and just 1st time for Chinese, still new int he game, USA won 80+ Gold, the most. It will never happen again!

  4. 83 golds for the U.S. in 1984 Los Angeles.

  5. When USSR boycotted, USA got more than 110 gold

  6. It has to be a summer olympics - because they award far more medals than the winter games.

That might actually be the USSR in the 1980 summer olympics, winning 195 medals.  My history teacher was slated to go for rowing, but our nation boycotted the games and his olympic dreams were crushed.

The US, Canada and various other western countries chose not to attend leaving virtually no competition at all for the Soviets.  It was essentially the battle of the the USSR and various other satellite countries.

  7. The highest number of medals by one country in a single Olympics and the year has been:

1980: Soviet Union (URS)  195 (western boycott)

1984: United States (USA)  174 (eastern boycott)

    1992: Unified Team (EUN)  112 (non-boycott)

The highest number of gold has been:

    1984 US: 83

    1980 Soviet Union: 80

    1988 Unified Team: 55

China is at 47 so they should get the most gold in a non-boycotted Olympics by Sunday (Closing).

  8. USA won the most GOLD medals in a single (summer) Olympics – they won 83 gold at the 1984 games held in Los Angeles. However, this result was somewhat mitigated by the fact that these games were boycotted by the Soviet Union and a host of other countries. (The Soviet Union broke the record at the previous Olympics in 1980 Moscow with 80 golds. Those Olympics were also boycotted by the U.S. and a host of other countries).. The most gold medals at a non-boycotted Olympics (in other words, with all eligible countries present) was 75 for the U.S. in 1904 St. Louis.

As an interesting footnote, I also did a bit of research to see which country has won the most OVERALL medals since the first Olympics in Athens in 1896 (adding total gold, silver and bronze won on a country by country basis) and the answer is…. Still USA! They won a total of 891 gold, 687 silver and 599 bronze for a grand total of 2177 medals.

Summary – USA holds the record for the most gold at boycotted, as well as non-boycotted as well as overall medal count since inception. All in all, the U.S.A. continues its domination of the olympics.... I am an Aussie so, no the research isn't biased ;-)
