  1. basmati

  2. Basmati is the most popular brand of rice in India, it is a variety of long grain rice, famous for its fragrance and delicate flavor. Its name means "the fragrant one" in Hindi, but it can also mean the "soft rice." India is the largest cultivator and exporter of this rice, followed by Pakistan,Nepal and Bangladesh with the causes of paddy field farming.

Traditional basmati plants are tall and slender, and their stems are prone to breaking in high winds. They have a relatively low yield, but produce high-quality grains and command high prices in both Indian and international markets

  3. Basmati is good for making pulav and biryani or plain rice.

Sona masoori is good for making south indian rice dishes such as lemon rice, tamarind rice, mango rice, tomato rice, vangi bhat etc. where you cook the rice first and then mix with the vegetables and spices. It is short grain and doesn't break easily.

Ambemohur rice, which has a mango blossom fragrance, available mostly in Maharashtra is also a popular. It is short grain rice.  It breaks easily.

    Best wishes!

  4. baasmati for biryaani and pulao making

    sonamasoori for hite rice making.

  5. Basamati is popular all over India but it is too costly so it is used only  for some special preparations like pulav, biryani etc. and rich people can only afford for its daily use.   Surati colum is another variety which is also tasty and popular comparitively cheap.  In Western Maharashtra Ambe Mohor was popular. I am calling it 'was' as now it is not available or rarely available. In my opinion it was suitable for this climate while Bsamati and other North Indian rice varieties are not suitable for Maharastrian climate.  There are south Indian rice varieties which are used for making Idli Dosa etc.

  6. Kohinoor, Lal Qila, India Gate are all good brands to buy rice.

Different varieties of rice are available, the most popular being Basmati. It has a lovely flavour, aroma and really long grains on cooking. It does not stick on cooking, each grain remains separate. A little expensive, but truly worth it.
