    AM/FM/TV/SW/WX

Almost all you want and you can crank it, it don't need batteries.  And it's pretty cheap.

It looks so cool I might buy one.

You'd need to buy a programmable "emergency" scanner for police/fire/ambulance.  Those can be a bit more pricy.  They are also at Radio Shack.

  2. For international broadcasts, the shortwave band is best (shortwave radio bounces off of the atmosphere, skipping like a stone on a pond, so it can travel greater distances than domestic AM or FM broadcasts. Note that in recent years many International news and entertainment broadcasters have **** down, but the BBC, CBC and other great ones remain. You don't need a radio to hear many of thse broadcasts -- they are streamed live on the Internet in many cases.

For police, fire, you do need a scanning radio. But more local governments are scrambling these communications.
