I'm not talking about a car that one guy made for himself and his friends. I am looking for a car that is available from CA to ME and everywhere inbetween.

  1. It varies by whether one is driving mostly in city vs mostly in country.

To come up with the best one has to take ones driving pattern and check out the mileage the vehicle gives with that usage profile.

One has to adjust for fuel... When CNG is available, its use can make a CNG powered Yaris or Corrolla a great choice. But one may have to stay close to home, where CNG is available.

  2. The Jeep Wrangler.  This is one of the few cars where you can get up close to nature while leaving a minimal footprint.

  3. Toyota Prius
