I'm going to Kowloon next month and will check in at the Marco Polo Hotel. Am curious on the delicacies HK has to offer, or are there none?

  1. Dim Sum, try the various types offered (Just go to any dim sum resturant)! n the desserts (u can go "h*i lau shan" for mango-themed desserts or "honeymoon desserts")! and also gai dan zai (egg scones?) at Dundas Street in Mongkok or nearby.. and also Stinky Tofu if u r game enough..

  2. Never been to HK, but Anthony Bourdain (No Reservations) was in HK and what caught my eye was the roasted meats (Duck and Pig).  Also, I'd imagine some awesome dim sum can be had in HK.

However, I've also heard that a lot of the good chefs moved to Canada before China took control of HK.

Like I said.... Never been to HK so my info is limited but listing what I would want to try.

Roasted meats, especially the pork with crackling skin and dim sum.

  3. First, when it comes to food, you will have almost endless choices in HK.  I suggest you to try the following:

Dim Sum (luncheon - like a Chinese style tapas, many small dishes to share).

Wan Ton Noodles - I know you can get this in North America, but believe me, those are a pale comparison to that you are get in HK.

BBQ Goose - Again you can get something similar in North America (but normally BBQ Duck, and rarely Goose), but this stuff is so good that the meat is tasty, juicy and incredibly tender.  The place to try this is at SAR TIN.

Street Vendors - OK, here you have to be a bit adventurist.  You can sample things like fried fish balls, to curry cuttlefish, to beef offal.  The good thing is that these are cheap, small and many varieties to choose from.

    Good Luck!

these are little HK style waffles, crunchy outside and soft n moist inside mmm. a store in tsim sha tsui makes the best ones.

then you should try find bakeries that have a lot of customers there (so you know its good quality), they sell really nice cantonese breads and tarts etc.

there are some chain stalls in HK called "hoi tin tong" that sell a herbal tortoise jelly, it isnt as bad as you think though, you eat it with a brown sugar syrup, very nice =)). the jelly is black in colour, costs quite a bit (50 HK dollar a bowl) but is extremely good for cleansing your system and is good for the skin. i love this stuff!

and i think the most delicious delicacy available in HK is the roast meat. there are many stores in HK that sell sets of roast meat as a meal with rice. roast duck and roast piglet is the best in my opinion!!

i hope you dont think my opinions are too gross, i love eating these and i hope you can try them!!

  5. Birds Nest Soup and Abalone also

  6. Try the Wang Hung Lo

  7. Street Vendor! If you like noodle soup, try it! I love them... fresh from the boiling pot to your bowl....

Also, BBQ... pork, duck... if you eat the 'inside' stuff : intestine, heart, liver, etc... this is the best place for it. Find the place that is not inside the hotel, it cheaper and more authentic. If you see the restaurant that has hanging meats on the glass display, you come to the right place.

    Enjoy Hongkong!

PS: Don't forget to shop at the street market. No it's not black market ;] don't worry!
