I am not sure you should be saying a pet is suitable for a boy or girl.

Choosing a pet for a child is more based on the age of the child, the responsibility of a child and the time and commitment the pet needs and the child can give.

After stating that, a cat would make a lovely pet.  They can sometimes be very cuddly

Dogs need a lot of training.  

A mouse, rat or a hamster is good as well, but some people don't like them. Rats are surprisingly cuddly and easy to handle.
