My daughter recently got her first job and I was wondering if anyone out there knew what the dollar amount that you can make each year or at least for 2008 to claim exempt status on her w-4.

  1. Actually, you're safer to simply to select enough exemptions to make the withholding zero.

  2. You still have to file a tax return.  She could claim 4 or 5 but her payroll dept. might not let her.  The IRS wants you to inform on people who claim too many.

  3. No limit to what she can make, it depends on whether she expects to have any tax liability.

If she is your dependent, she shouldn't file exempt if her total income for 2008 will be over $5450

  4. Assuming that she is not taking her own exemption that number for 2008 would be $5,450.  If she were to take her own exemption you can add $3,500 to that.
