  2. Rent is about a group of people living in New York City with AIDS.

  3. It should be called "Rant" since it's a rant fest, but singing rant, of course, in depressing and sometimes philosophical and introspective ways. Ranting about rent is what they do focusing on contemporary issues like being g*y and having AIDS. An AIDS person is living at an apartment building that doesn't require them to pay any rent and so the person can stay alive just paying for treatments, but then the landlord wants to impose a rent charge and sends his tenants into panic.

After an introduction with the cast singing "Seasons of Love," the film opens with apartment tenants (including two friends and roommates, Mark and Roger) expressing their anger with suddenly being asked to pay rent which had previously been waived by the landlord. Collins, a former roommate of Mark's and friend to both Mark and Roger, returns from out of town and is attacked by three men and left for dead in an alley ("Rent"). Benny, the landlord and former roommate of Mark and Collins, who has married into a wealthy family, offers to give Mark and Roger free rent again if they can convince Maureen (Mark's ex-girlfriend) to stop her protest. The protest is to take place at Maureen's performance space which Benny is planning to to turn into a cyber-cafe ("You'll See").

Of course my position on paying anything for anything is that people are born on this planet, in this universe, in this creation for a reason, and that isn't to make someone else rich by making you pay to live on Earth. Everyone shouldn't have to pay anything for anything and not have to work, especially for slave wages. Does it make sense to you that you are born just to work and then on top of that to work to make someone else rich who perhaps enjoys life and then you die? It's hideous.

  4. They should rename it "stop whining, grow up, get a real job and pay your bills like everyone else."

  5. I don't want to give it away, but it's a great story about non- rich people and the music is great! go see it now. in fact, you should buy it for yourself because it is so good.

  7. Rent is a rock opera, with music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson inspired by Giacomo Puccini's opera "La Bohème." It tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side in the thriving days of the Bohemian East Village, under the shadow of AIDS.

Rent, which won a Tony Award for Best Musical and a Pulitzer Prize, among other awards, was one of the first Broadway musicals to feature homosexual and bisexual characters. In addition, its cast was unusually ethnically diverse. Rent brought controversial topics to a traditionally conservative medium, and it helped to increase the popularity of musical theater amongst the younger generation.  "Rent speaks to Generation X the way that the musical Hair spoke to the baby boomers or those who grew up in the 1960s, calling it "a rock opera for our time, a Hair for the 90s."
