Question:

What is the name for more than one type of atom?

I have this assignment for Physics and these are the questions that I am stuck on:

1.) In your descriptions include information on the number of and charges on the sub-atomic particles in each atom? (To me that doesn't make any sense, its as if a word is missing! I have done the descriptions but I don't know what it wants me to add)

2.) Some elements have more than one type of atom. What is the name given to these atoms? (Now this one makes sense but I can't find the answer anywhere?)

Thanks for any help given!

  1. 1. Wording is kind of weird, but it seems like it's just asking about the sub atomic particles.  Electrons have negative charges, protons have positive charges, and neutrons have neutral charges.  I'm not sure about the number part, though.  Is there a diagram?)

    2. Compounds, I think.  The part throwing me off is it says the name of the atoms, not the structure as a whole.

  2. 1).An atom contains a definite number of electrons(-ve charge) which is a specific number (for each element in the earth) rotating around it's nucleus. The nucleus contains other two particles called proton(+ve charge) and neutron(neutral).

The protons and neutrons too rotate arund each other in the nucleus.

So the sub-atomic particles might be these three particles.

2).Yes. The mass number, i.e the sum of the protons and neutrons differ for some atoms. They are called isotopes. Eg: Hydrogen has three isotopes : Protium,Duterium, Tritium(Radio active).

For the first one,Protium, the number of neutrons is zero. Duetirium - 1 (So mass number 2) and Tritium - 3(mass number 3 (Radioactive))

Now let me remind you, this question should go to Chemistry.

  3. 2) these are not elements but these are compounds ........

  4. 1. You should tell (a) how many protons/ neutrons/ electrons are there in such or such atom, then tell (b) what charges each of those particles bears (1e, -1e, or 0)

    2. The name is ISOTOPES
