  1. The woman on the front of a ship is referred to as a Figurehead or Maidenhead.  These carvings come in many forms of man, woman, animals and symbols.  The oldest origins are from "eyes" painted on the bow of the ship so that she could "see her way".

    The curious thing about using a woman's image as a figurehead is that women were considered bad luck onboard.  However, if a woman bore her b*****s to the sea, it would ease a storm and calm the waters so that the ship could make her way.

  14. Carving is called a "figurehead"  and is not always a woman, may be any figure thought to bring good luck to the ship. In the orient, eyes are painted on the ship so she can see her way & avoid danger.
