I can't quite figure this out - I have never heard of tyres with these markings on them before. The numbers "28 - 622" are written on the sidewall, along with "700 x 280" in brackets. What is the common name for this tyre size?

  1. 700x28 is common:

    700 mm dia. x 28 mm wide.

The 28 is the tire size in inches.

The 622 is the ISO rim size.

    edit - yep 700c

  2. This is commonly referred to as a 700c wheel and tyre, although very close in size to a 27" x 11/4" which you are probably familiar with, they are not compatible.

The 700 is the nominal tyre overall diameter, the 622 is the nominal rim fitting diameter, and the 28 is the nominal width of the tyre, all in millimetres.

  3. 700c x 28 is specifically a road tyre size , the second number being width.if you are replacing this stick to size in brackets as we commonly use these figures.choice of tread pattern depends on use. get out & ride.

  4. The "C" in the designation of 700C does not refer  to cm, it is the third version of a nominally-700 cm wheel, with some standard tire width being part of that measurement. That is, there was a 700A and there still is a 700B, 700C, and 700D, none compatible with the other, and all relying on different width tires to achieve the 'true' measurement.

The others are correct, the designation on your tire means it is meant for a rim with a bead seat diameter of 622 mm, and it is 28 mm, or about 1 1/8" wide. This is a pretty common size for touring, although it is too fat to fit in many new road bikes.
