  1. As already stated, the name is hydroponics. While that may sound like only water is used, it is not exactly true. Just about any media other than soil will fit that description. Even bales of hay would meet the description because it is hay, as one example, that is used to support the plants, and not "soil" as we think of soil. To the best of my knowledge, potting soil or such things as the mix used for mushrooms once it will no longer support mushrooms would not qualify as a "soil-less" medium for plants. A rather interesting experiment has been done, such as at the Disney World 'Epcot' center where plants are grown from a support of some kind, and their roots are kept moist with nutrient loaded water sprays. Keeping the roots moist, and just hanging in the air works quite well. You just need to make sure that the roots never dry out, and the plants get the light that they need as well.
