What is the name given to the shell prior to the "VALENCE shell" ??

1st shell=K

2nd shell=L

3rd shell=M

and so on

I think it depends on how many total shells are in that particular atom.

Electron shells are labeled K-P or 1-7 with the lowest number starting on the inside.

1st shell (K or 1) will have 1 subshell (1s)

2nd shell (J or 2) will have 2 subshells (2s, 2p)

3rd shell (L or 3) will have 3 subshells (3s, 3p, 3d)

I don't recall any particular name being assigned to the shell prior to the outermost shell.
