What I saw today in the Northwoods water was an adult frog, 1 1/2 inch

wide, 5 inches long from mouth to tale, 4 developed legs, webbed feet and solid medium to dark green in color, with a tale.

  1. It's called a "froglet",the stage between tadpole (baby) and frog (adult).

  2. Are you talking about a polliwog?  It's a baby frog that is in between a tadpole (all tail, no legs) and an adult frog (all legs, no tail).

Yes, they are common.  Every frog alive on the planet was at one time a polliwog.

  3. As adults, frogs don't have tails.  They are in the order Anura, which means "no tail".

  4. Ascaphus truei is the only species of frog that retains a tail-like process/projection into adulthood, however it's possible you found a frog that had yet to fully complete it's metamorphosis.

  5. A tadpole is the name of a frog with a tail, & yes they're common because they're baby frogs.

  6. Frogs with tails are simply tadpoles metamorphosing into adults. Gradually the tail ( from when it was a tadpole) will reabsorb once the process is finished.

    Below from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metamorphas... (Amphibian)

"Amphibian metamorphosis undergoes a single change from larvae, called a tadpole, to an adult. In the typical amphibian lifecycle, eggs are laid in water. The tadpole then emerges from the egg, and swims freely within the water. The tadpole has gills, a tail and a small circular mouth. The tadpole will grow, until it begins metamorphosis. Metamorphosis begins with the development of the hind legs, then the front legs. The lungs develop, and the tadpole begins to swim to the surface of the water to breathe. The intestine shortens to accommodate a carnivorous diet, and the eyes migrate rostrally and dorsally. In frogs the tail is absorbed by the body, for the last stage of metamorphosis."
