I used to know the name, and it is driving me nuts. I have been collecting fabric swatches from all of my projects for the last few years and am finally ready to make the quilt, my goal was 500 different squares, but I am going to go with 400.

  3. The people who answered 'charm' are correct.  It dates from the days when girls used to swap charms, the sort that go on bracelets, with each other.  They also swapped buttons in the early 19th century, when printed ones were first developed, and beads.

  4. It's generally referred to as a Charm Quilt.  That means that no two squares use the same fabric.  You can be completely random when you lay it out, or make an effort to balance lights, darks, and color families.  Have fun!

  5. From what you're describing, a charm quilt.  If you're looking to use much smaller pieces a postage stamp quilt, however that would take thousands of 1x1"  pieces.

Just FYI a couple of different legends involving charm quilts.

    1. A charm quilt was made with all different fabrics.  A young girl started collecting bits and pieces of fabrics from everywhere.  Family, friends, trading, etc. the 1000th piece would be given to her by her true love and future husband. (Now there's a reason to keep everything counted correctly!)

    2. A charm quilt would actually have 2 matching blocks and the rest all different.  A quiet game for a child to play while ill in bed would be to find the two matching pieces.

  6. i kinda think it is a patch work quilt

    xx

  7. When every piece of fabric is different (never used twice), it's called a Charm quilt.

  8. Charm Quilt , if no two squares are the same ;)))

  9. Yep, Charm is correct.  Jeanie R-P
