I have three beautiful shrubs that i planted about 4 years ago and I can't remember the name of them to get more info on. Every summer they grow to be about 10 feet tall after cutting them down in the beginning of spring to about 2-3 feet from the ground, they lose their leaves during the winter and the produce beautiful reddish pink flowers at the end of each stem the flowers almost look like berries before they open and the cluster of flowers are kind of cone shaped. the leaves are a darkesh green. They bloom mid to late summer and go all the way to fall. If anyone can tell me the name of this shrub I would most appreciate it. It's driving me crazy!!! Oh by the way I live in zone 7.

  1. Could your shrub be in the family of Weigela?

  2. When you said it blooms in the summer I immediately thought of a Crape Myrtle although without a picture I couldn't give you the exact name of the Crape Myrtle (most have indian names). They do grow quite fast. They have a great root system too.

  3. Crape myrtle is what they are and you are right, they are considered a large shrub by many authorities.  There is no clear - cut division between the word "shrub" and the word "tree"...certainly not decided by whether the plant is evergreen or not!

  4. here are a few possibilities.

    crape myrtles

    hydranea endless summer

    rose of sharon

    red star hibiscus

goodluck all survive zone 7 winters

  5. It sure sound like rose of sharon.  My rose of sharon does not bloom until late July or August and is quite beautiful.  My rose of sharon is well over 10 feet tall.

  6. It's not a shrub, it's a tree, crape myrtle. shrubs don't loose their leaves.

  7. I think you are describing a butterfly bush, aka buddliea.

  8. What is the flower color?  And be more specific on how it differs from the panicle hydrangea if you can.  There are many varieties of hydrangea, so some may have darker foliage.

Are the leaves smaller, glossy, compound?

  9. crape myrtle.... best shrub in zone 7!.... the big ones do become trees!!... here's some to eyeball....
