What is the name of that thing the doctor uses to look into your ear and check you for brains?

  1. It's called a "Democrat Detector."  If there is a brain in the skull, then the patient is  a Democrat.


  2. It's called otoscope in vet medicine too. Though generally we're checking the ear canal and not looking for brains. Hehehehe, most dogs don't have those anyway!

  3. Well it doesn't quite check for your brains :-D  but it's called an auriscope.

    EDIT: I wonder if the name is an English vs. American thing? A quick straw poll of colleagues at St.Thomas' Hospital, London today had most calling it an auriscope. The only ones calling it an otoscope were a U.S.-trained nurse and a doctor from Trinidad.

  4. The name I am more familiar with is "otoscope." They use it to examine the ear canal and to visualize the ear drum.
