skimboarding it is surfing with a thinner board and about a foot shorter and you start the beach and meet the wave at its break instead of sitting in the water for the wave. Unless you aretalking about inland or flatland skimboarding which is the same just flatland and a thin layer of water.

You are referring to Skimboarding. If they are good they can actually surf waves like a surfer at certain beaches if the conditions are right like swell direction. This usually requires a outgoing wave that intercepts a incoming wave. The outgoing waves are typically created by incoming waves hitting seawalls, or other obstructions. Really steep beaches can also produce them. Not many people get to this level though since it usually is just a vacation rental sport at surfless beaches or lakes. Fun but it will beat you up pretty good when learning.
