What is the name of the bird that flies from Hawaii to California with over a 6 foot wingspan & sleeps in air?

I was on a whale watching event once and one flew over and the boat person told us what is was, it was a huge bird. Would like to remember the name and I can't seem to look it up. Any help would be awesome, thanks
