Barbaro.  Though quite a few racehorses have come to the same tragic end.

July 6th 1975..Ruffian broke her front leg while in a match race against the colt Foolish Pleasure. She kept trying to run on 3 legs, even when her jockey was trying to pull her up to stop her. Despite the efforts of veterinarians, she could not be saved, and was euthanised. She is buried at Belmont Racetrack, her head pointing towards the finish line...of the race she never got to finish.

I believe you're thinking of Barbaro who won the Kentucky Derby, but broke his leg in the second leg of the triple crown, the Preakness Stakes.  He was put down last January after a 9 month struggle for life.

its wasnt the darby...it was the breeders cup and the horse was George Washington .....god!!
