  1. Grameen Bank.

  2. kiva.org.  They give loans to both men and women facing extreme forms of poverty.  It's  a great site.  I give "loans" away during the holidays.

  3. There are countless organizations that give micro-credits.  The World Bank just started, Peace Corps has been involved in some capacity (primarily advising) for decades, and smaller credit institutions with UN grant money.

The loans are primarily aimed at small groups of women because they have traditionally been excluded from business and most micro-loans are geared toward improving the quality of life (food, cooking, water, health etc), and women are the masters of the hearth.

  4. see the grameen bank.

the money goes to women mostly as they do a better job of doing the right hting with the money.

see micro credit loans there are now others doing likewise.

  5. You know, im not too sure, i believe there are several. But I did sit down to diner in london a few years ago, with the head of one of those banks. He was a nice man if i remember too...

  6. the grameen bank is the bank for which Nobel laureate Yunus worked, and is the bank which employed the concept of microcredits on a grander scale. Obviously, the idea isn't all that new.
