Eg Hispaniola and Domincam Republic share the island called La Hispaniola.

I know that the collection of islands is called The British Isles, but this just popped into my head the other day and I was amazed that not only did I not know it, but neither did anyone else that i asked!

Is it Great Britain? Thats all i can think of.

  1. UK, or the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland", is the official name of the nation and encompasses all of the above except the British Isles

Great Britain is the island containing England, Scotland and Wales.

Ireland is a bit trickier. It's that island to the west of Britain, but only Northern Ireland is part of the UK. Southern Ireland is an independent country, whose official name is  the Republic of Ireland

  2. Great Britain.

We refer to the UK as "Great Britain and Northern Ireland"

  3. The full name is the British Isles, but the main island, which includes the ocuntries of Scotland, Wales & England is simply called "Britain".

  4. The native word is Welsh

    Prydain Fawr.

    Great Britain,

    which was borrowed into English

    Britain

  5. The single island is Great Britain, all the islands (including Northern and Southern Ireland) are the British Isles and the United Kingdom is made up from England, Scotland Wales and Northern Ireland.

  6. It's called mainland Britain. Great Britain includes Isle of Wight, etc. But if you just want to refer to the SINGLE island without the outlying islands, then it is mainland Britain.

  7. Great Britain. This also encompasses the many smaller Islands which are geographically connected. The British Isles include Ireland, although people from the Republic of Ireland might not be happy about that.

  8. there is no name for the island - a number of islands dont have individual names

  9. It is Great Britain....

  10. The answer is Great Britain.

If you wish to include the surrounding Islands and the Province of Northern Ireland then it would be called the United Kingdom.

  11. Yes, Great Britain. The rather bombastic-sounding 'Great' is due to a poor translation of the Roman name. They called the part they ruled 'Provincia Britannica' (most of modern England and Wales) and called the whole island 'Britannica Major'. This literally meant 'Greater Britain' in the sense that a city and it's suburbs get called, for example, 'Greater London'. It implied covering a wider area rather than implying some special claim to greatness.

  12. Mainland Great Britain encompasses england, Wales and Scotland.

Great Britain is made up from mainland GB and the smaller islands surrounding such as the Isle of Wight.

The UK is made up of GB and Northern Ireland.
