  1. It is called an antenna.  Moreover, it is a whip antenna.

  2. A large antenna in country areas is usually for HF.

UHF is only generally useable in line of sight/ short range communications. Only under rare atmospheric conditions can it be used for long distances.

  3. Hi

If in Australia they are called HF aerials.

    Cya

    :)

  4. Its not a HF antenna. HF is for the High Frequency band and wont work on the Ultra High Frequency band that is UHF.

There are several names that these aerials go by.

The most common in Stationmaster. This name was originally used for AM base stations, however, now UHF is more popular, so the treminology has moved over. You also hear them being called broomsticks, fishingpoles, etc.

The most important thing to look for is the dB rating the aerial has. I have 2m broomstick type aerial with a 6dB rating. I just bought a small metal aerial that is 1m in length, as thick as a knitting needle and it has rating of 9dB.

Make sure you buy a good quality brand as well, like Uniden or GME. Also, if you use a great big aerial, make sure that it is securely mounted. They can snap aluminum and bend steel very easily.

  5. UHF whip antennae
