  1. ash is indeed the answer......cypress is light until it soaks up water which it does very well and then its really heavy


  2. balsa wood is very light weight and may be used for oars, but in louisiana, cypress is the best for oars it is light and strong.

    I have one that my father gave me that is over 50 years old and I still use it.

  4. I have a very nice beaver tail paddle and it is made of Ash.

Ash is the most popular wood for paddles and oars but its not as abundant.  Spruce is also a good wood but not as strong as ash.  Modern paddles and oars are often made of laminated boards of alternating pieces of cheaper more abundant woods, thus making them stronger.  Sealing is more important with these newer woods as they do not resist rot as well.
