The USGA has a range at Golf House in New Jersey and they hit balls with a robot that was nicknamed Iron Byron.  It was named that because it makes the exact (almost) swing every time, and Byron Nelson was so consistent.  But now there are lot of other tests too.  They shoot a golf ball at 100mph into the face of drivers to measure the COR (spring effect) and they test golf balls etc.  But the USGA is the place to find info web site is USGA.org.
