  1. The lac insect Kerria lacca ( older name Laccifera lacca ), scale insect family, Kerriidae ( Lacciferidae or Tachardiidae in the past )  and other species  produce a varnish called SHELLAC.

    The insects live on trees called lac host trees where they secrete the lac resin which is scraped off and manufactured into shellac. To produce just 1 kilogram of lac resin around 300,000 insects lose their tiny lives. ( cit. )

    Shellac is used in many industries, for example, as an insulating material in electrical work (Chamberlin 1923) and in paints and surface coatings (Varshney 1976).  ( cit. )
