What is the name of the rock formed by lightening strikes?

I believe the phenomenon occurs more commonly in the desert. Lightening strikes the sand and a certain crystal or rock is formed but I cannot recall the composition or the name of the material.

  1. Fulgarite is your answer. The heat of the lightning melts and fuses silica grains of the sand as it passes through, leaving a tube, hollow, of fused quartz. They can be found on beaches, too, particularl in sand dunes. Tidal action will destroy them. They are not sturdy. But the result displays quite convincingly just how thin a lightning bolt actually is.

  3. Wow! that's awesome, I've never heard of that. We studied rocks a couple years ago, but I don't remember talking about that type of rock. That is so cool!! Thanks for teaching me something :-)
