  1. You can buy a chainbreaker from any bike shop from about £4, but it is not an easy tool to use, the drive pin can easily be broken in inexperienced hands, and to ensure you can re-rivet the chain, it is important that you do not push the rivet completly out.

But why do you think the chain needs shortening? are the gears not working properly, do you think the chain is worn out?

I strongly advise taking it to your local bike shop and get their opinion before you start doing work which may not need doing, get a quote off them, there are many other things that can affect this area.

  2. Chain breaker.  You can get a cheapie at the bike shop for about $10.

  3. A chain link extractor.

    Bicycle shop /Halfords.approx £4.00.

  4. You need a chain breaker / riveter

  5. Chain Tool, or Chain Breaker.

Park Tool makes the best.  See link below.

This is assuming that your chain is not a SRAM or similar chain with a Powerlink, in which event no tool is needed to remove the chain, but you'll still need a chain tool to remove links -- that is, to shorten the chain.

  6. bike chain shortener thingy

  7. The item is a chain break, here is the only one listed on E-bay,
