The only way you can get bariatric surgery covered is to have group insurance through your employer.  Insurance companies are in the business to help insureds while making money.  If they covered this type of surgery for everyone that wants it they would all fold up within the year.  We are a nation of obese people.  Individual policies have to be written individually.  How could a company make money buying into a 10 or 20 thousand dollar claim from the start?  You would have to be insurance with them for the next 20 years and not have any more claims.

My health plan is also thru my employer, and it only offers a discount to Weight Watchers and certain gyms - if you prove you've gone a certain number of times.

NO insurance plan will just cover weight-loss surgery out of hand. *IF* they cover it by some freak of nature, there's a million hoops to be jumped thru by providers and patient - because it's expensive, high-risk, and requires lifetime maintenance by the patient, they're NOT going to cover it just for asking.

My health plan is provided by my employer. It does not cover any type of weight loss treatment, pills or surgery. It all depends on what type of plan your employer purchased.

Many plans do not cover weight loss surgery.
