  1. The earliest Roman calendar began in Spring. Around the Equinox.

March (Martius) was the first month. But unlike later calendars, it had only ten months—namely Martius, Aprilis, Maius, Junius, Quintilis, Sextilis, September, October, November, and December. This resulted in their calendar year being only 304 days long. Since the other 60 days fell in the middle of winter, the Romans simply ignored them.

That is, until one ruler realized he could fit two more months of taxation in that time slot.

He added Januarius and Februarius. Later Quintilis and Sextilis became July and August when they were renamed to honor Julius Caesar and later Augustus Caesar. Originally, Quintilis and Sextilis each had 30 days as did Februarius.

However, each of the two emperors borrowed a day from Februarius to make their own months longer, which is why July and August have 31 days and February only has 28 days.
