  2. English: from Old English wester or westerne ‘western’ + mann ‘man’, hence a topographic name for someone who lived to the west of a settlement, or a regional name for one who had migrated from further west.

    Mostly from England and/or Germany.

  3. Origin of a name is a VERY generic thing, and is not limited to any one place.  For example.. since it is found in many places, you can't just "pick" one, assume the name is English, then assume that it makes YOU English.

    Doesn't work like that.

You have to trace back to your ancestor with the name, and find where he/she comes from.  Many names are changed from something else (especially if you are talking in the US), so you can't even be positive Westerman is the original name.

    search through here

    http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/f...

this gives you a clue as to how many places the name does show up in.  You don't know which one is "yours"..
