What is the nature of social stratification?

"What is the nature of social stratification?"

I'm not sure on how to answer this question..

First thing that comes to mind is like the disgusting caste system as practiced in India.  A cow can be higher on the social ladder than a human being.

And what family you were born into determines your life long fate and it cant be changed until you die.  And even then you can only hope to be reincarnated a bit higher on the social ladder.

Everything and everyone couldn't be the same, otherwise we would just be like clones...
