I need to make a lot of repairs around the house and I need to know what the necessary equipment is for a general contractor. Does anyone know? Or does anyone know of a good web-site to look at?

  1. Referances.

  2. Knowledge of building codes and the phone numbers of subcontractors is all that is really needed.  You can apply for a building permit to act as your own general contractor and just do the work you know how to do, hire subcontractors for all the rest.  Ask questions on issues you don't understand at the building department, they will help you out.

In my county, a general contractor needs to pass a test and have liability insurance in order to get a license.  That is the only requirement.

  3. You must be an owner-builder like me.  I only buy the tools needed for the job at hand.  Over the years, the same tools come in handy time and time again.  I don't buy any battery powered tools.
