Marketing research is the foundation of marketing. You must know what works and what doesn't, you must know what people like, need, or want. If you didn't research marketing, then marketing wouldn't be effective.

the need for the marketing researches is derived from the needs of the market<customers> , the research will show u exactly what ur targeted audience need, becuase u dont produce what  u want!! u produce what ur customers want!! another use for the marketing researches is to exactly define the problems u face, and from the results <spss> u should know what to do in order to get over them . and for sure u should know the difference between the marketing research and the marketing intelligence, if u have a presentation i think that ur going to be asked about this!

I have a lot of experience marketing small companies online (I have 3 companies).  One of the best ways is to sign up at business directories and protals.  These are basically listings of businesses (simliar to the phone book).  The advantage is that these portals usually get a lot of traffic and they're ranked high on Google because of all the quality links they contain.

My favorite portal is called Directory Exclusive.  I signed up a few weeks ago because they're giving a away a free business card holder when a person enter's their company info.  I received it in the mail 3 days ago =)

I don't know if they still have that promotion, but you can try to get the free card holder here:

Both answers listed above hit the nail on the head.

The analogy I usually give is this: Marketing is like field goal kicking (sorry if you are not familiar with American football). If you don't know where the goal posts are, you will never be able to make a successful kick. Research tells the kicker where the goal posts are.
