  1. Are you asking about new types of locomotives on the market?  The two big diesel-electric players in the U.S., Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) and General Electric each have new locomotives out.  EMD a few years ago released their SD70ACe a cleaner burning version of their popular SD70 model (SD stands for Special Duty).  GE recently released their GEVO series (or General Electric Evolution Series) which is also a cleaner burning locomotive (for instance, it traps released exhaust, stores it in batteries, and reuses it as horsepower).

Other new models include N-ViroMotive's GenSet locomotive, another very clean burning model and RailPower's Greengoat switcher model which runs entirely off of batteries.

  2. Go to

    www.renfe.es (also in English)

There you can visit the newest European high speed trains used in Spain.

On www.elcantabrico.com you can visit a luxury train on narrow gauge running through the north of Spain. As far as I know, it´s engines are unique: diesel-electric on non-electrified routes, diesel engine switched off on electrified routes.

  3. New trains are being introduced all the time but I believe the very latest type of train is the Maglev unit (magnetic levitation or what used to be called linear induction) being developed in China which can travel at 270mph (430kph).

To keep up with what's happening on the rails you really need a good quality publication like the Railway Magazine (published monthly in the UK) or see the Railway Technology link below:
