What is the nicest area to stay at in Montevideo for an american. where can i meet the most people etc... quiero tener una buena experiencia. Tengo vientidos anyos y estoy intentando aprender espanol! gracias a todos

To me the best neighbourhood in Montevideo is Carrasco. You have nice houses, it's close to the sea front (it's actually Rio de la Plata but lookes like an ocean there), nice pubs and restaurants, nice schools, it's family oriented, nice malls. etc. And it;s very very safe to live there. Been there 3 times and loved staying in an hotel in Carrasco (Best Western Pedro Figari) However go to the public market place for parrillas (Donde Alberto is a great place in the market)

¿Specifically for an american? Well, I don't know specifically, but I can recomend very nice places to go. There are neighborhoods like Pocitos, Punta Carretas, Carrasco, Malvín or Buceo, all of them by the river coast, which are generally the most visited places by the turists. You have several shopping centers (Punta Carretas Shopping, Montevideo Shopping, Portones Shopping and Tres Cruces), where you can find all types of shops, restaurants, markets, etc. according to what you want. There is also beautiful beaches, with a very beautiful coast avenue, where you could see the most beautiful sunsets. Other places you could go may be the Old City, with their historical buildings and architeture,or the citadelle, with the Independence Plaza, the old front of the city, or the Solís theatre. There is also the Prado, a nice park and neighborhood, where the old inhabitants of the city used to go on vacation before the coastal districts were put fashionable. There you can find several and importants monuments, a beautiful botanical garden and a wonderful garden of roses, between other stuff. There are other places that are very likable for turists, but I recommend to you that you discover by yourself. But the best you'll find in this city is the people. Uruguay is very known by its people, always kind, always nice, always arranged to help the other. So I wish to you a great vacation here in this city, the city that I love.
