I have a cousin who's birth weight was 3.0kg. Now, she's 3 weeks old and weighs 3.8kg and a height of 55 centimetres. Is that normal?

What exactly is the normal weight and height of a 3-week old baby? I can't find it anywhere.

Thanks for your time everyone. :D

  1. That sound about right.. They dont give normal estimates of weight and height anymore because it depends on alot of things, Like an asian baby would be smaller than a Maori baby

    this sight might help

  2. The short answer to your question is that there is no "normal" weight"

That is part of the reason you are having difficulty finding an answer to your question. The most important sign to check for during the first 3 months is how they "maintain and gain weight." As long as your infant is producing wet diapers and stools on a regular basis than you should not worry about weight gain too much. Babies are born in all shapes and sizes so you will not see any definitive scales for weight gain. Babies are born full, during the first two days of life they typically loose about 10 percent of their birth weight. Then, they gain it right back once the mothers milk fully comes in or they begin to drink more formula. During the first two weeks, as long a your infant does not fall under its birth weight or go more than a day without a bowel movement you have nothing to worry about. Anyone with kids will tell you that babies grow up fast, however some weight gains are unrealistic at 3 weeks. Don't expect your child to double in birth weight until about 3 months. My son was 7.4 ounces at birth and at 3 months weighs about 13.5 pounds.

Finally, if your're still not comforted, here IS a list of averages for a 1 month old from Eirphram.com. You'll notice the range is very broad and that your baby cousin falls well within "normal"

Baby's Age Healthy Weight Range Healthy Height Range

    1 Month 3.0 Kg - 5.1 Kg 48.0 cm - 58.0 cm

    1 Month 6.6 lbs - 11.2 lbs 18.9 inches - 22.8 inches

Hope all this helps! Good Luck!

Remember, your cousin will have the rest of her life to worry about her weight so dont worry about it for now :)

  3. Well, I dont know the kg and cm equations, but my son was born 7 lbs 12 oz, and 21 inches long. Based on his birth measurements, he shouldve been 7 lbs 14 oz and 21 1/4 inches to be EXACTLY everage, right at the 50th percentile...

  4. My 3 week old son weighs 4.36kg now and was 3.9 at birth and he is 54cms

  5. There is no "normal weight" for a new born. It all really depends on their weight when they were born and how well they're responding to their feeding method. If your cousin is concerned about her child's weight then she should talk to her daughter's pediatrician.

  6. There really is no normal, it is just an average, but all babies are different sizes.  When you take the baby in for his/her checkup you can ask your doc, they will tell you if your baby is underweight.  If your baby is big, no worries, the bigger the healthier.  And if you breast feed your baby will be bigger and it might seem abnormal because most babies are bottle fed now days.  If you need to know right now go to capitalhealth.ca and look under babies
