  1. 56k is the maximum speed for a dial-up line.  Normal could be relative depending on the quality of the line and the infrastructure supporting it.  Copper telephone lines are cleaner now because people use DSL and other services across them, however there is no guarantee of quality.  Public service commissions in different states mandate what the minimum speed should be.  Some do not require a minimum speed at all.  Phone lines were designed to transmit at roughly 7.8k which is about the range of human speech, beyond that it's all up in the air.  Hope this helps.

  2. 56K

  3. 56k is the maximum over a noiseless channel. you will probobly never get that speed, especially if your so far out that you cant get dsl.

normal real world speed over a are around 45kbps.

there are ISP's who have compression addons that will make the connections seem slightly faster. especially if you set the compression on its highest setting.

try to get cable or dsl. or even wireless.

  4. 56k. so pretty much you want to download mozilla firefox. because it is faster than internet explorer. playing games online with servers like WOW or Guild Wars is out of the question. and you can't really watch movies without waiting about an hour for a 30 second clip. google is about the fastest webpage on the internet that you can connect to with dial up. so pretty much dial up is for those that like to abuse themselves and can't afford dsl or broad band.
