  1. I am not sure of the actual speed but I do know that it takes a cargo carrier 20 days on the water to get from SF to Hong Kong. Maybe you can figure it out from there.

  2. smasson is correct.

Container ships average 23 kt made good (actual speed). Break bulk/general cargo 10-12 kt.

    Reefer boats (fruit boats) 20-28kt.

  3. Usually container ship goes up to 25knots. bulk carrier, tanker and those other kind of ship make around 10-15 knots.

  4. A conventional freighter travels at an average of 24 knots, or about 28 MPH.

  5. A cargo ship has a displacement hull.  The generally accepted formula for calculating hull speed for a displacement hull is: The square root of length multiplied by 1.34.  Example – 300 feet long would have a “hull speed” of 23.20948 knots.

The square root of 300 is 17.32051 and multiplying that number by 1.34 equals 23.20948.

This formula does not give the actually true hull speed in all cases.  The design of the hull does have a factor in hull speed.
