I have just moved into a new home and there is a phone line connected with dial tone but won't dial out ... there used to be a (four digit I think) number you could dial that would tell you the STD number you were calling from?

  1. why not just ring your mobile number on it no need to answer it but the number will come up on your mobile then you will have it and it wont cost you a penny

  2. You will have to contact BT to get the line activated and sign a new contract. the line was obviously in someone elses name and has been discontinued.

The previous answer is a bit daft as you can't call it from your mobile as you don't know what no. to call.

  3. you can dial 150 from that phone as operator, 150 and 999 calls are still allowed.

the 1741 you are thinking of was discontinued when caller ID was introduced!!!

  4. You can try the 17070 test number, which reads back the CLI of the calling line.  If it says that no CLI was detected, then try again dialing 1470-17070.
