  1. irish are from ireland and english from england two differnt countries.irish and english language both official languages, but english is main language. there are a few areas in ireland where irish is the still spoken as their main language. but apart from these areas very few are fluent or speak irish regularly. irish language is taught in schools as a subject from around age of 4 to 18 and is compulsory but still majority of ppl leave school with very little irish and most ppeople will only know a few words and phrases in  gaelic  as adults. so therefore apart from gaeltacht areas , english is the main language used in home and business work settings.

  5. English and Irish

  6. There are actually 2 official languages in Ireland, those being English and Gaeilge(Irish). Though English is the most spoken, government policy dictates that Irish is taught to all children from an early age and is compulsory learning through second level. All government policy and law is published in both languages as there are people living in some parts of the country who are Irish speakers only. Only recently, the European Union recognised Irish as an official language.

  7. Article 8 of the Irish Constitution states:

"(1) The Irish language as the national language is the first official language.

    (2) The English language is recognised as a second official language.

You will see from the map at site 2 below that Ireland and the United Kingdom, of which England, is a part are two separate islands.  The Irish people are descended from the Celts, while the English are mainly descended from the Anglo Saxons. So they are two different races of people with differing heritages.

  8. The official language of Ireland is English ... the 'native' language is Erse Gaelic.  Irish people are made up of several different types of people ... the Gaelic people (who came from Europe and through England originally), the Norsk people (who came from Denmark, mainly, in 'invasions' looking for 'loot' to take home) and the Anglo-saxons (people from England and western Europe) ...

  9. There are two "official" languages English and Irish. Before the Great Hunger (1846-1852) the majority of the native population spoke Irish. However by 1880, due to depopulation, emigration (you know, ethnic cleansing) and British colonial rule English became the dominant language. When Ireland took her place among the nations of the world in 1923.One of the first goals of her young government was reclaim her native language.  Today all school children are required to pass an examination in Irish before they get their Leaving Cert or graduate from HS.   Civil servants are paid a bonus for documented proficiency in both languages.

Sad to say Irish is still rarely spoken outside of the "Gale Talk" areas of the island.  In my own family there is only one fluent Irish speaker.  Irish, due to the care of the government and pride of her people was saved from dying.  But practically for the average person on the street, most Irish citizens are English only.

  10. Its Gaeilge always has and will be

  11. Officially, the language used here is english, but our native language is irish. Unfortunately over the years our speaking irish has become less common. We still learn it in school though.

    Slan leat!

  12. Most people in Ireland speak English bt in different places in Ireland they speak a native language Gaeilge (Irish)! They speak this language in places called An Ghaeltacht (which means Irish speaking place)! You can find Gaeltachts in Donegal,Galway,Waterford and a few other places!
