English is the most common language in the United States, but is not the official national language, making English the de facto official language of the United States.

  1. De facto means "in practice" but not by law. English is the most spoken language in the U.S. There are bills proposed to make it the official language but none of them have become laws.

So your answer could be: No official language, but English is the de facto official language.

  2. Klingon

  3. english, but in the next few years it may become spanish...

  4. it is currently English

when the country first started they actually tried to change the national language to German (as evidence shows it didnt get passed)

im some southern states they want to change it to English AND Spanish

because, due to illegal activity, it seems that there is a lot of people there that speak espanol (Spanish)

  5. It has actually become a mish-mash of slurred noises. For example: "Foreerortoogo"

This translates: "For here, or to go?" (Usually spoken very quickly as one word at McDonald's.)

    Another: "Paypurrorplasstik"

This translates: "Paper or plastic?" (Referring to your choice for carrying groceries from the store.)

    Lastly: "Mayeyeputtyooonholduh"

Translation: "May I put you on 'Hold' - ?" (Verbally hurled in your general direction when you call to speak to your primary care physician.)

  6. what you just wrote in

  7. It's just a fact: There's no official language in the US.

Try using Google.com or search in Yahoo! Answers and you'll find details.

  8. The US doesn't have an official language. English is obviously the most commonly used language and it makes sense for that language to predominate. But to give it "official" status would, in my view, be political dynamite, especially if it were to be to the exclusion of other languages.

  9. how about English.............

  10. The official language of a country would surely be spoken by it's leader so therefore the official language of the USA is DUMBASS

  11. Neither the UK or the USA have an 'official' language.

English is the 'de facto' language for both!

  12. Americanese

  13. United States, doesn't have official language.

    the most spoken is English.

  14. Ipso de facto?

    Your trying way too hard!

Edit: Thanks for the Thumbs Down!
