I bought a used bike with no manual...there doesn't appear to be a dipstick, just a fill plug and drain plug....it needs an oil change...

  1. There is an oil level window near the bottom of the right crankcase cover.

Always check the oil level with the bike straight up and down (as if you were

    sitting on it).

After draining the oil, add oil until it covers 3/4 of the window.

Start and run the engine for a few minutes to let the oil circulate through the engine and fill the oil filter.

Turn off the engine and let it cool down for a few minutes to let the oil drain back down to the crankcase.

Check the oil level - add more if necessary, up to the top line of the window.

  3. I have a 1986 XT350 and the manual gives the following info:

SAE 20W40 type SE motor oil (I use full synth)

    Total amount 1.6 L, 1.7 US qt.

Periodic oil change: 1.3 L, 1.4 US qt.

With oil filter replacement: 1.3 L, 1.4 US qt.

Also, there is an oil level window on the right side of the engine just forward of the foot peg. The oil level should be just at the top of the window when the bike is level. The oil filter is a metal screen type, so you can clean it with Varasol or other solvent, just don't destroy the o-rings with something to harsh. Email me with any other questions or if you want a copy of the manual.
