  1. As a modern day political entity India is as recent as British Empire. This land was, in ancient times known as 'Bharatha Varsha' (in religious invocations it is referred as 'Bharatha Varshe Bharatha Khande..'), the land ruled by 'Bharatha', son of King Dushyanta and Shakunthala (illegitimate daughter of seer Viswamitra & a celestial courtesan, Oorvasi) progenitor of Pandava & Kaurava princes who fought the 'Maha Bharatha' war, in the eponymous epic (the longest epic written by man). Ancient Indians never called 'India'. Present day official name is 'India that is Bharath'.

NB.: The use of 'th', dental sound like in 'path', 'beneath' is not an aspirate;  and is different from the 'palatal' like 'teddy', 'told'. many use 'Bharat' also.

  7. In old Indian cultural and religious sculptures like Vishnu Purana, word Bharat is used a lot, which is still used. Its official name is Bhārata Gaṇarājya. Modern name India is actually named by Arabic and Persian merchants. Because of the river Indus, that was known as River Sindhu or Sindh some thousand years ago, Arab and Persian merchants called this land Hind. Hind means a land which is irrigated on the water of River Sindhu, or the land behind the River Sindhu according to the geographical locations. Later on, when westerners arrived here, they named it India, which in Latin language means the farthest land. Or they may have named this because of River Indus. Later on in 17th century, due to the use of Indo-Persian language now known as Urdu was being developed. After the fame of Urdu, this land was then named as Hindustan, which means "Land of people living in Hind". Today, all of these names are used to represent this land of India. However these names strongly rely on the context and language of conversation.
