  1. The oldest surviving insurance company in the U.S. is the Insurance Company of North America. It was founded in 1792 as a marine insurance company and began selling life insurance in 1794. In 1982, INA merged with Connecticut General Life Insurance Co. (founded in 1865) to form CIGNA, which has since morphed into a health services company.

Edit:  The oldest insurance company in the U.S. which remains independent is The Hartford Insurance Group, which was founded in 1810 as The Hartford Fire Insurance Co. Although once owned by ITT Corp., The Hartford became independent again in 1995.
