  1. Heinz E Muller-Dietz (Historia Hospitalium 1975) describes

The ninth century Sinhalese, Mihintale Hospital as being perhaps the oldest hospital in the world. The oldest archaeological evidence so far, is of a hospital in the ruins of Mihintale, where the remains of a hospital built in the ninth century can still be seen. The layout of the building and the discovery of a medicinal trough and surgical instruments proves this beyond doubt.

The Royal Marsden, Chelsea, London, England was the first hospital in the world dedicated to the study and treatment of cancer, founded in 1851. (and is still a hospital).

The Bethlem Royal Hospital, London, England, is the world's oldest psychiatric hospital. founded in 1247 (and is still a hospital).
