lotto started in China about 200 B.C. and was called "pik phu thet".  Was brought to Italy at the end of the 13th century by Marco Polo after his visit to China.  The Italians used to process as a means to select government officials as sometimes the had as many as 120+ people running for the same office.  After that the rest is history as they say.
