  2. Hrm, that's a good question.  I know that Tolkien is generally considered the godfather of the fantasy genre, and Smaug was in the Hobbit. However, I'm sure that this isn't the first dragon in fiction--though, perhaps, it is the first in which the dragon had character development.  Dragons have been around (though generally in passing, not necessarily as a full blown character) for a long time--many myths and folk tales mention dragons.  Good luck!  I'll bee keeping an eye on this one, I would be interested to see what types of answers you get :)
